What It Means to Be an Acire Care Carer
As a live-in carer, you will:
- Work independently and unsupervised in clients’ homes.
- Manage varying levels of dependency and medical needs, including providing specialized care for Alzheimer’s and dementia.
- Collaborate with other care professionals and agencies such as Marie Curie, Macmillan, and district nurses.

Requirements
- Show proof of your eligibility to work in the UK.
- Complete a DBS/PVG check.
- Have at least six months of experience in a regulated care setting.
- Be self-employed with two professional references, including one from a current or previous employer.
- Provide evidence of professional development and relevant training certificates.
Essential Training
- Manual Handling training.
- Basic First Aid certification.
- Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults training.

How to Become a Self-Employed Carer
1. Get Qualified
While there’s no legal requirement, obtaining a care certificate, diploma, or NVQ will enhance your credibility and expertise.
2. Register with HMRC
Declare yourself as self-employed and manage your taxes through Self-Assessment.
3. Write a Business Plan
Outline your goals, ideal clients, and expected income to keep your vision on track.
4. Draw Up Contracts
Prepare clear contracts covering hours, pay, responsibilities, and cancellation terms. Include documented procedures for complaints, safeguarding, and risk assessments.
5. Complete a DBS Check
Secure an enhanced DBS check to work with vulnerable individuals.
6. Get Insurance
Obtain public liability insurance, and consider business equipment coverage.
7. Set Your Rates
Research local rates and factor in travel, equipment, and time off.
8. Find Clients
Promote your services via online platforms, social media, and local advertising (e.g., community centers and libraries).
9. Interview Potential Clients
Meet clients to ensure mutual compatibility and clarify expectations.
